It’s the night before we leave for 6 months. So this wont be a long entry, as Im tired and packing and tying up all loose ends. But, my sister and mom took Daniel and I to see the Dalai Lama speak at the U today. And of all the things he said, the line that struck me the most was his opening:  “…All living beings — even animals, even insects — just want to live a peaceful life.” Thats what this trip is all about for me: Finding a way to better understand the living things around us — the people, the animals, the vegetables and plants — so that we can peacefully exist together in a way that is the least detrimental…to each other and to the world.

Many people don’t care to really know what they’re eating or how what they eat affects the world (if you’ve read my blog, you know how guilty I am). We are able to shut ourselves off from the lives taken with every crappy hamburger at McDonalds, or the waste created with each processed meal. But there is a reality behind each bite we take.  And it’s important to be able to face those truths… whether you’re a vegetarian, a carnivore or a recovering junk food addict.  All I know, is that as I set out on this trip, I want to be open to learning about food, farmers, neighbors and the world.

Im realizing more and more that it’s a good thing to question and to think about my choices. As I learn what’s out there and whats real, I’m going to try to not be afraid to look… perhaps you can join me.
